VEX Robotics Essay Challenge

A written essay of up to 250 words in on the subject of "what VEX Robotics means to me." This challenge is to write a short essay on what exactly VEX Robotics means to you. Tell the judges your own story of your involvement on a competition team, in a classroom, or as a hobbyist working with VEX. Perhaps VEX robotics has made you rethink your career plans, or made you want to study engineering in college, or helped you understand physics better. Maybe you have a friend or family member who learned something valuable from their VEX experience. However VEX robotics has improved your understanding, inspired you to try something you didn't know you could do, or even changed the course of your education - we want to hear about it.

Imagine this, a 12 year old boy trudging through 7th grade below the radar barely passing his classes. This used to be me before I became involved in my robotics program at my school. The change between 7th grade and 8th grade was drastic. I went from doing nothing in my school to doing and participating in as much as I could. Now I have an A in every class. I look forward to going to school and my parents sometimes have to drag me out of the robotics classroom. The robotic and technical engineering involved with vex robotics is what I excel at. The differences vex has made in my grades and...

How robotics changed my life

Journalism. That is what I thought I was going to do with my life. I had never thought about engineering or anything of that sort. That all changed when my journalism teacher assigned me the job of reporting on the schools robotics team. I reluctantly agreed thinking that it was going to be uninteresting. I was dead wrong. From the first competition on I was hooked, I couldn’t get enough of robotics. I soon joined my schools robotics team and during the summer I took some basic VEX classes that my team offered to incoming freshman or the newbie’s. I could already tell that there was more...

My Transformation

My Transformation from a High School Junior without a clue concerning my future to a double major student. As a Junior in High School, I was busy taking SAT and ACT tests to be admitted to college. Mail and emails were flooding in for Universities across the country. I was meeting with our school’s college admissions counselor. I was in the band, Cross Country Team, Technology Student Association, some video production classes, and a few computer science classes, and I was enjoying myself. I seemed to be a student who was always on top of the ball, but I had a secret, I did not know what...

VEX is my past, and my Future

What VEX is to me. To me, VEX is the progression of my life. First it was building blocks, then Lego, now VEX. It is the embodiment of my personality, and a medium for my ideas. I have wanted to be an engineer for as long as I can remember, but this goal had drifted from me in my first couple of years in high school. I was no longer “that kid who can build things” but “that dorky kid who plays with Lego”. I forgot about my passion. It was still there, but I had no drive, no desire to build and create. VEX gave me an outlet for that. It was a system more advanced than anything I had used...

VEX Robotics Changed Mindset

“Robotics? Get real,” I thought. My vision of a robotics team was the typical group of nerds. You know, the ones who are always talking with fancy words about how smart they are. My mom prodded me to go to one meeting to see what it was actually like. I agreed, barely. It was nothing like what I expected. Everyone was actually really nice and it was fascinating to see what they were designing. That first meeting I helped build a prototype robot, a dinky little thing, but it was oddly very exciting. The first competition I went to was even more thrilling. Everyone had robots designed for...

A Lifelong Hobby

For me, robotics has always been more than a competition. My passion for robotics started when I was very young, possibly eight or nine. I had a Lego catalogue, and saw the RCX robot. I thought that was the coolest thing in the entire catalogue, so I went out and got it. For the next few years, I enjoyed making all sorts of things with it, and eventually bought the NXT. This experience in my life was really important to me. After this, I began to learn programming, starting with C#. Then I got really interested in 3d modeling and video editing. These skills and the knowledge I gained from...
