VEX IQ STEM Career Readiness Online Challenge Sponsored by The REC Foundation
Nearly 2.5 million STEM careers are going unfilled. Career readiness is one of the unsung skills that teams involved in VEX Robotics programs will adapt through their participation on a competitive robotics team. Career exploration is a vital component in developing a skill set. In this STEM Careers Online Challenge, you will be asked to explore a specific career within a STEM field and create an exciting and engaging presentation about your chosen career.
Things to keep in mind for a successful submission:
- What STEM career appeals to you most?
- Share how your involvement in competitive robotics is preparing you for this field.
- Share required skills or fields of study that persons working within this career gained/studied to allow them to be successful.
- How do you believe this career field will evolve over the next ten years?
- Is there a well-known person working within this field? How has this person inspired you to learn more about this career path? What do they attribute to their success?
We want compelling, engaging, and well-researched insight into the growing field of STEM careers available to students using their skills learned in competitive robotics. There are many paths that you can take to becoming a STEM leader, which will you choose?
This Career Readiness was co-authored by two students, Joseph Donayre and Deery Melara. They are both goal driven and action oriented. They have dreams for their futures as is evident in their essay writing about career readiness.According to Joseph's mother, he has wanted to be an aerospace engineer foras long as she can remember.
Robotics Students Arumi and Arturo researched Meteorology as their career exploration for the Career Readiness Challenge. Arumi was on the Robotics Team last year, Arturo is new to the team. They found information on what a Meteorologist does and what it takes to become one. They also found similarities to being on a Robotics Team and using many of the same skills in becoming ready for a career in Meteorology. When they completed their photo essay, Arumi stated, "This came out better than I ever imagined."
I’m Emma and I’m on team 74177Z, the Lady Pirates. We are a Vex IQ team of six girls from Pinecrest Sloan Canyon. I chose to write about how software engineering is used in space exploration because I love programming and I would like to one day be able to send a rover to another planet. I learned more about this profession, like that the average annual salary for a software engineer is about $100,000. This field is very popular because software engineers can find jobs in almost any industry. In the United States in 2019, there were about 1,469,200 jobs in...
This will help expain many things about the feild of data science and what makes it so intruiging in today's modern world. It will also discuss how data science now has an overwhelming effect in Western society, just by computer programming and crunching numbers. Throughout this essay, it explians what would help one be successful in data science, how competitive robotics can help prepare one for the subject, some top scholars and how they use their skills, and what will the future behold for it.
We are Team 1705A of the PF Robotics Academy in Ontario, Canada. We used our imagination to present you with a new career named the Virtual Retail Services Engineer. Our entire team worked together to create the entry for the Career Readiness Online Challenge. We hope that you enjoy our presentation.

We worked together as a team and combined our knowledge of robotics with plants to explain how an Agricultural Engineer can make our planet a better place to live. Agricultural engineers will be in high demand in the near future, as we become more environmentally conscious.
Your friends Team 1705D of the PF Robotics Academy,
Shauna, Luke, and Hannah.
We are Jesse and Jeanelle from NOVA IQ Robotics Team 99808A and our dream is to become a radiologist and surgeon. We use robotics as a way to learn about STEM and we believe that we are "Unlocking our Future Medical Careers with STEM."
Killian Babb is currently a sixth grader at Leo Elementary. This is his fifth year in VEX IQ Robotics, and second in the Middle School Division. He is a member of team 141B with the Leo Elementary/Leo Jr. Sr. High program. After discovering this Online Challenge he saw the opportunity to explore his dream of working in the aerospace industry. In his research, Killian identified a position where he would create simulations for spacecraft. Having both drive and talent in the fields of computer programming and complex mathematics, he continues his journey to reach...
My Dream STEM Career
The STEM career that appeals to me most is to become a robotics engineer. A robotics engineer is an expert who develop, design, build, and program robots that can replicate human actions. A similar job of robotics engineer is robotics technicians. The difference between robotics engineers and robotics technicians is that robotics technicians mostly are in charge of maintain and repair robots or robotic devices that have been installed in use. Moreover, robotics engineer is a higher level job so a robotics engineer’s salary is higher...
My name is Amanda. I am on a team number 74177U and I am brand new to robotics. I was excited to submit this online challenge essay and conduct research on Software Engineering. I have chosen to research Software Engineering because I have a dream of becoming a Software Engineer one day. I have learned a lot during the research process.
I hope you enjoy reading my essay!
