VEX Robotics Competition "Make It Real" CAD Engineering Challenge Sponsored by Autodesk®

Have you ever wanted a component for your robot that was not included in the kit of parts? Do you want to design and make something unique that sets you apart from your peers? Then the “Make It Real CAD Engineering Challenge” is for you! Autodesk is sponsoring this challenge and giving you a chance to focus your passion for CAD and apply your skills to solve a real-world design issue.

In this challenge, you will use the same Autodesk 3D design software used by professionals to conceptualize and model a new part for a robot that improves its functionality or overcomes an existing problem. The new part must be designed to fit an existing robot and may consist of multiple pieces that form one part design. The robot may be a competition robot (VEX, FIRST, BEST, PLTW, SkillsUSA, TSA, etc.) or another robot that performs an interesting task. Note that your 3D printed part from this online challenge may be used in the VEX U competition, but not in VRC.

To help you succeed, access to Autodesk software is available at no charge to students. In the Make It Real CAD Engineering Challenge, you must use either Autodesk® Fusion 360™, Autodesk® Inventor®, or Tinkercad™ to model your custom robot part. Whether you’ve used the software before or are brand new to CAD, the Autodesk Design Academy provides lessons and video tutorials for all skill levels.

To get started, carefully read the complete challenge requirements on this page. Then visit the Autodesk Design Academy challenge page to download software, watch tutorials and learn how to create custom parts. When you’re ready, return to this page to submit your entry.

The future is yours to design, and we can’t wait to see how you change the world!

Bevel Gear Adapter

Manuel_Rosado

In Vex Robotics Competition Motors are very powerful for the new V5 System but they are very limited. Middle school and High School can only use 8 in a robot. It’s very difficult to do different types of systems with very limited amount of motors. These new V5 motors are big and for the limited space that we have, it is difficult to make some components. That’s why we created our own Bevel Gear Adapters, and they are gears where the axes of the two shafts intersect and the tooth-bearing faces of the gears themselves are conically shaped. The reason that we call them Bevel Gear...

VEX V5 Battery Shell

c2crobotics

Many people on our team have had bad experiences with the VEX V5 battery clips. For instance, fingers can get pinched in between the battery and the clip, the battery can also often get jammed in the clip, and the battery clip can break or become loose. To improve this, we are redesigning the battery clip to a battery shell with screws to connect the shell to the robot. This way the battery is easier to put on the robot and there is less risk of getting hurt. Our VEX V5 battery shell is designed to be used very easily. It will be part of the robot. Simply insert the screws into the...

License Plate Holder

John-Terry

Introduction:

My team decided to create a license plate holder. Throughout the year, we always run into an issue of where our license plates will go and how they can be easily switched between the blue and red sides. We know this is a problem that many other teams encounter and we wanted to offer a cheap and good-looking solution.

Purpose:

This part serves the purpose of holding license plates in a way that allows them to be easily switched in a tournament. To explain further, a red...

Planetary 2-Way Ratchet

jsasek464

Our Planetary 2-Way Ratchet utilizes the functionality of a planetary gear system and 2 sets of ratchets. Various Inner Ring Pawl Arrangements allow for multiple complex uses of this part. The primary of which is turning multidirectional unispeed movement into unidirectional multispeed movement. On our robot, this allows us to have one roller constantly changing directions while the other roller only changes its speed.

Rotating Angle Connector - 97101G

tchen1515

Our team's part is a rotating angle connector, acting as a lockable hinge. With our robot, we struggled to find a way to connect C-channels at custom angles, and usually resorted to complex workarounds that didn't solve the problem. So we designed a part that has two pieces that can rotate around an axle and be held in place by two shaft collars. C-channels can then be attached to either side at the desired angle.

Robotics Tower Structure

Mnester22

The towers on our robot were unstable so we tried to support them with 1x1 flatstock, but that was still unstable. I designed a new support piece in Fusion 360 macOS 10.15.7. I learned more about how to use planes to design different elements. I will use 3d design software in the future because I am planning on buying a 3d printer. 3d software will help me in my future career because I am planning on doing something engineering related.

Wire Hook CAD Design

jpagano

We wanted to create a part that interacted with a wide variety of robots, something applicable to any design. We wanted something that didn’t intrinsically depend on a specific robot design for niche use cases. This design isn’t tied to a precise situation; it works anywhere.

Rather than solving a small niche issue, we decided to create a piece that tackled a recurring issue for us: zip ties. Wire management for VEX is limited to these plastic monstrosities, which are disposable, and single use. They aren’t environmentally conscious, and are hard to adjust...

Variable Angle C-Channel Joint - 8838B

Robohawks- Coach Lund

Created by Derrick Chen from 8838B

VRC Middle School Division

Part: Variable Angle C-Channel Joint

Description: This joint allows easy connection of 2 wide C-Channels of any length at angles ranging from 0 to 180 degrees. This would allow beams to be placed at angles other than the standard 90 or 180 degree angle which will open up unlimited possibilities in constructing innovative designs incorporating diagonally placed beams.

VEX Slide/Clip-On License Plate 4073G

larson141

For this year’s Make It Real CAD Challenge, I made a clip/slide-on VEX License plate. I made this part because between matches, one often needs to change out the license plate, from red to blue or vice versa. However, this often involved unscrewing a few things and took up valuable time that could be spent making repairs to the robot or finding out what was wrong with the robot. The new part would have the same functionality as the current VEX License plate, but this one could be clipped or slid on to a C-Channel, which would make changing out VEX License plates faster and easier. My...

Chassis Wheel Operationalizer

wesleygeiger12345

Opportunities in technology and innovation are so exciting.  Everywhere you look, you can find new and inventive technology that makes our world a better place to live.  When you see all of these great inventions one need to pause and think about how and why they were developed in the first place. Evaluating the world and completing a needs assessment is a great place to start. When you are an inventor, you do not want to create something that already exists.  As I thought about the...

Cleaning Bot

rcross

Introduction:

We wanted to create a robot with the means to clean tables easier, and more efficiently than conventional methods. What we quickly realized was that VEX did not have a part that we could use to make a cleaning apparatus. The 3D printed part that we designed is meant to hold cleaning wipes and apply enough pressure so that the robot can complete a pre-programmed set of commands to clean a table. With the device we designed combined with the robot, you can clean multiple tables simultaneously and completely...

Fire Force

rcross

Intro

Recently in Southern California, wildfires have raged constantly, endangering the lives and property of millions of citizens as well as the lives of the brave firefighters on the frontlines battling the infernos. In order to combat the infernos engulfing the state, we were inspired to design and create a firefighting robot to try to save not only millions of dollars, but lives as well. This robot is designed to report and extinguish small fires before they get out of hand. Using advanced 3D modeling technology we designed a part in order to connect our...

Candle Snuffing Robot

rcross

Introduction:

We created a snuffer bell part to add to a robotic arm.  The robotic arm will swing down and snuff the candle by starving it of air.  We decided to create this piece because it is a helpful innovation, which frees people of the partially dangerous responsibility of snuffing a candle. Automating the candle snuffer makes it quick and convenient and on top of this, it removes part of the danger of forgetting about a candle and starting a fire.   The new part will be used by those who enjoy lighting candles or the pleasant scent and...

New Half-Circle Gusset

williamrey5494

We created this gusset because the gussets provided in the robotics kit are not effective. They are very flimsy and are not stable. For example, one hit from another results in pieces falling off the robot, and sometimes, C channels will get loose, which deteriorates the foundation of our robot. Our gussets have holes at 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees on both sides with the 90-degree hole being shared. These gussets will be more cost-effective because we won't have to buy different gussets for each angle.

How it is...

Wire Clip

2024rekerben

9210C 2020 CAD Make it Real Challange:

For the 2020 CAD Make it Real challenge, our team chose to make a clip for wire management. Wire management has been a problem for our team so far this season, we have gone through a lot of unnecessary zip ties and have had to spend a lot of time using zip ties to tie down wires, only to have to take them off again when we want to make a change. Our solution to this problem is to make a wire clip that can be bolted onto our robot. This simple yet useful clip will ensure that the wires stay where you want them but at the same...

Axle Support

751Abvhs

The idea of the part, known as “Axle Support,” came from a dilemma of team 751A’s competition of the last year. There was a long axle going through the width of their bot that bent under the stress from the weight of the motors and gears attached to it. This 1 inch by 0.5 inch part, composed of a bracket on the back of a metal spacer shaped chamber, is meant to reinforce axles bending or malforming under the pressure of gears and motors attached to it.

The use of this part is simple and effective. The bracket on the back of the metal...
