When I attended my first WHS Robotics meeting in seventh grade, I never thought I would fit in, let alone have fun or accomplish anything. Today, five years, three international competitions, and countless irreplaceable memories later, I enter the classroom shared by our three robotics teams as club president. When I look around, I don’t see my teammates; I see my family. These once "nerdy guys" are now the people I turn to when I need a friend, whether it be for advice, a workout buddy, or someone to study with for tomorrow's math test. Through my experiences as a member on Team 542 and as club president of WHS Robotics, I have done everything from making music videos and cheering with pom-poms to meeting with corporate officials for sponsorship and representing the youth of manufacturing engineers at the AeroDef Exposition. VEX has opened my eyes to real-world applications of math, science, engineering, and technology. VEX has not only changed my perspective on robotics but also my perspective on learning in general. Now I know there is an actual use for the trigonometry I learned last semester. I have chosen to pass on what I have learned to others. Having worked with VEX for five years now, I lead local VEX workshops for rookie teams and teach VEX to elementary and middle school students during the year and over the summer. I hope to one day inspire others to allow VEX to change them the way it has changed me.
