Robots are normally built with the purpose of helping others. Some robots reduce the danger in a task humans have to perform. Other robots have the ability to operate beyond human capabilities. Designing a robot for dangerous tasks beyond human abilities is a difficult task. We have designed a robot that is practical, helpful to others, and well beyond the capabilities of a person. We present a robot design, called “DiscoFly”, to perform bomb defusing. DiscoFly is capable of defusing bombs with two robot arms on a quad-rotor frame. We designed the DiscoFly to be lightweight and compact enough to be carried and maintained by one soldier. The four propellers can be aimed horizontally at the ground for vertical take off and landing. For maximun speed in level flight, the right and left propellers are tilted so that they are perpendicular to the ground while the front and back props remain horizontal to provide lift. Defusing bombs in military applications is a key application for robots. The DiscoFly will help soldiers and save lives.
