We have designed a Continuously Variable Transmittor unit that can alternate between a 1:4 and 4:1 gear ratio, with every possible ratio in between. This unit means we can achieve a maximum torque ratio, but allows us to smoothly and quickly change to a high speed ratio, without the need for extra motors.

I love this concept and the fact that you can change between ratios smoothly without the risk many gear transmissions have. While I overall admire this entry, I'm still scratching my head whether how would the change in gear ratios would work in real life. Considering that belts usually have a lot of traction to get a grip on the "pulley", I'm not sure if closing the pulley would make the belt expand as demonstrated in the video. Lighten me up.
