Vex Planetary Set

The planetary gear set (the ring gear and the rotating apparatus) was created to establish efficient and safe speed reduction (or increase if it is used "improperly") for the VEX Robotics Competition. This part can be used in systems that require massive speed reduction and torque. Systems that are required to bear heavy loads or endure periodic impulses can be simplified and made more effective through the use of a planetary gear system. We used Autodesk Inventor Professional 2017 to design and model this part. After sketching and dimensioning the part on paper, we transcribed it into Autodesk. The entire process required 5 hours. We learned how to overcome the difficulties in designing a product to perform within certain design specifications. The parts need to be compatible with standard Vex Products and in order to ensure that, we relied heavily on the designs of other vex products for our dimensions. Inventor is a large part of our STEM program, and many of our VEX team members are well versed in it. Some of our team members hope to go forth and become groundbreaking engineers in the real world, so 3D design software and skills will definitely give us an edge in such a competitive industry.
