5. VEX Magnetic Plate

The VEX Magnetic Plate is designed to replace mechanical locking mechanisms, by using two magnetic plates to lock parts in place when they collide. These plates can also be used to repel each other, so components can be moved by attaching the sides with the same charges facing each other. This versatility allows the plates to be applied in a multitude of situations outside of this original intention, as it can be used to unfold parts of a robot or to slow collisions.
