Summary: I chose to dismantle a decommissioned APC Smart UPS 750VA in order to discover any faults with the device. At some point, the UPS had started to get excessively hot and release fumes. However, the front panel indicated normal functionality and the device still passed self-test every day - even the on-load battery check! Parts ranged from a heavy power transformer to surface mounted microcontrollers. There were a couple of Texas Instruments operational amplifiers on the main board used to process signals ready for analog to digital conversion to provide feedback information the microcontroller could use for control.
