VEX and VEX IQ Recycling Projects Rockway Rockbots PLASTICS AND NUTS IN ROBOTICS ARE GIVEN A NEW LIFE Recycling is a crucial part of our activities at Rockway Middle School. Creating a culture of conservation and preservation of natural resources is a must in our classrooms. This time, besides the collection of a great amount of electronics and other items, we ideated new ways to reuse the plastics that we used in past competitions, mostly pertaining to the VEX and VEX IQ kits, which are robotics materials. Annually the game “elements” change (elements like rings, bean bags, cones and pipes). We have also noticed that they were just sitting there in boxes without any apparent use. So, we designed small pieces of furniture like accent tables and stools to decorate classroom stations and the teacher’s lounge, made of these elements and other recycled materials we found around the robotics room. In addition, some of us noticed that there were a lot of nuts and washers that we could use no more in our robots, because they were stripped, broken or uneven. To give them a new life, we designed earrings and many other accessories for boys and girls made of these items.  This idea was very well accepted among the students so much that they started to “order” them to wear! These and other recycling activities continue to take place in the classrooms at RMS and we are very happy to share them with the community.
