The Tubular Flute By Co-Captain Eric Fabanich of 6403B         For the Recycle Online Challenge, we have decided to go for a instrumental goal for this challenge. We have constructed a simple flute out of a wall pipe used as a fence for the 2015-16 VEX IQ game Bank Shot. The procedure to make this flute was not complicated and it was very easy to make in a short amount of time. The result afterwards was definitely pleasing and guarantees that it will play music. There are many reasons as to why we have decided the flute was the best tool to create for this challenge.     First, learning to play an instrument is neurologically beneficial, or in other words, very good for anyone who wants to become smarter. Learning an instrument means that a skill needs to be acquired, whether it would be from the wind family (oboe, saxophone, flute), percussion family  (drums, cymbals), string family (violin, cello, guitar), or whatever instrument it may be. Skill is developed the more someone is around it; therefore, the familiarity and the skill being obtained will enhance the brain to be adaptable to different things. This can make it much easier to learn other things in the future, reducing stress to opening up. In general, learning an instrument can help someone deal with their stress as well as enhance their learning capability.     Second, creating an instrument out of a tube is cheap. Flutes are very pricey, ranging from as low as fifty dollars to as high as thirty-thousand dollars. These prices alone can scare anyone who wants to learn a new instrument. Using a PVC pipe, something cheap and easy to find, is the solution to this problem.     After following a few directions on the internet as to how long the pipe should be as well as where the holes should be drilled, creating a flute is very easy. For a school, this could be very beneficial to teach children how to play instruments because of both the inexpensive pricing and the simplicity of creating one.     Looking at the parts we had from previous years, we saw that going for an instrumental approach would be different and innovative. Yes, we could have done a shelf or a table, but we wanted to make something that would stick out and definitely have some value. Looking at the small tubes, we thought that it would be able to make a wind instrument. In this case, we have decided to make a flute. To make one, we looked some information as to how to create one.     After finding this in handy, we used a ruler to find the where to drill the holes, a drill to drill the holes, pipe cutters to shorten it to size, a piece of cardboard cut out to fit into the flute to act as a stopper and hot glue to attach the cardboard. The time to figure out the idea took an hour and drilling the flute took us two hours. In total, it took a small amount of three hours. It was a very efficient way to make a flute and it works as it should. Click HERE for Youtube Link URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG4bBN7PtLU
