VEX IQ Challenge Girl Powered Online Challenge Sponsored by Google
Girl Powered is an initiative to redefine the face of STEM by creating a more inclusive environment for all students within the robotics community. Together, with the support of the entire community, we strive to encourage equal participation of young women and men in competitive robotics. We want to use this challenge to show the robotics community at large just what it means to be a Girl Powered VEX IQ Challenge team!
Things to keep in mind for a successful submission:
- When you hear the phrase, Girl Powered, what comes to mind? How is it reflected in your team’s approach to robotics?
- Share how your team has taken initiative to create a more inclusive environment that attracts a diverse group of students.
- Share how each team member has tried various roles on the team (everything from designing, to building, programming, strategy, awards, etc.). Explain what you learned through this experience.
- How do you believe diversity of perspective changes your robot design, your team chemistry, and even your ability to succeed?
- Who is your STEM role model and why? Does this person inspire you to have a more inclusive team/program? How?
We want compelling, engaging stories that give us insight into how you’ve taken the Girl Powered initiative and incorporated it into your experience on a VEX IQ Challenge team. The benefit of having a diverse team will become apparent through your individual stories.
When our team began last season we never realized the capability that we had as a team in these challenges. We started off going to competitions for the fun of it, thinking that we wouldn’t win or make it so far like other people did. We never lost hope or gave up, little by little each competition we improved significantly until we achieved our goal of winning. The phrase that kept us motivated is girl powered. It influenced us to work hard so our expectations are high enough to win at every competition this...
We are team 47G. Our journey into the world of competitive robotics started last year, when we participated in the 2017-2018 Ringmaster game. Although our team is slightly different this year, the determination, perseverance, and the flow of innovative ideas that define us remain the same. With our previous experiences, we've realized the potential girls can have in the STEM fields and learned the true meaning of the phrase “Girl Powered”. We’ve incorporated our discoveries of what makes up a Girl Powered team to work...
Improving Together As One
When our team hears the phrase “Girl Powered”, we think of our robotics team, friends, moms, and successful businesswomen. These people are important because they are all girls that support us and they are all able to do great things. We also think of how our robotics team is run by girls and how our team is successful. That makes us feel confident and it gives us a boost, so we are able to do better in robotics.
In addition to making our team confident, we have helped more girls get into STEM programs because of an...

I am a new member of my team, “Let’s Go Bots Today!” So far, my experience in this team and community is amazing. We do not consider each other as “team members,” “rivals,” or “just friends.” We consider everyone as a family. We help each other, we care for each other, and most importantly, we all have fun whilst we all try to achieve our goals. Each team has their own goals but, we work together to achieve them whenever we need each other’s help. I could say that I am very comfortable with this community. Everybody is supportive...
