45 degree new part

Presentation: My name is Sebastian Alejandro Zertuche Hernandez, I’m 12 years old and I’m driver and designer of the team 10622A – Robotik World Center of middle school category. Idea: I designed this new part because on my robotics school team we was thinking to use a holonomic drive chassis for the robot to be able to move around the field easily using four motors. But placing the wheels at 45 degrees requires using many parts that take up a lot of space that is useful for positioning the motor. That's why I considered it a good idea to be able to use a part dedicated to that. Design: I used the snapCAD program to design the constructions of our robots, but to make a personalized part my teachers told me that it was necessary to learn a program to edit them, so they taught me how to use Autodesk Fusion 360. One of the advantages of Autodesk Fusion 360 is that I can use an existing part and modify it to achieve a new part, which makes it easier to design new parts with the format used by Vex IQ. Design process: To design the new part I used three parts of 2x4 holes, one for the center of the wheel and two to offset 45 degrees and have enough space to place the motor. First I put a part of 2x4 holes and then placed a second piece at 45 degrees internal with respect to the first. In the outer space between the two pieces, an extrusion was made to fill and leave the new part with more support material. To finish, the same process was carried out with the third part of 2x4 holes and that would remain symmetrically. I had to re-extrude the excess material generated to make the original pattern of the Vex IQ pieces visible and make it easy to place the pins to build things. Conclusion: Using Autodesk Fusion 360 helped me to design a unique part that helps improve the construction of our robot easily and efficiently, the part was very useful to solve the problem of using a large number of parts to make a holonomic drive chassis resulting in a more aesthetic and clean construction. We even found other possible uses for this new part. I will continue learning to use Autodesk Fusion 360 to be able to make my own part and make unique robots, there is still much more to learn about design and someday I would like to be able to make animations and my own videogame.
