A common issue for all VEX robotics team is a lack of stability. With the games getting more and more intricate and complex, many robots have sacrificed stability in order to incorporate all of the aspects of each game. Personally, my team has struggled with securing perpendicular c-channels to each other; often, the c-channels are part of very essential components of the robot so lacking in stability is not an option. The 90 degree standoff will prove to be critical in enhancing structural integrity so teams can continue to tackle the various aspects in each game. The 90 degree standoff secures various parts in perpendicular planes. The application for this versatile tool can be applied to securing gearboxes, lift bars, and with enough creativity, even claws. For my team, we wish to have 90 degrees standoffs to stabilize many vertical c-channels that serve as gearboxes for our ball roller intake, catapult shooter, etc. The 90 degree standoff will allow us to pursue more ambitious designs without fearing a lack of stability as the 90 degree standoff ensures another dimension of steadiness. In order to effectively design this part we used Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019. This software, plus the VEX library of parts, allowed us to meticulously design the 90 degree standoff. I inserted two standoffs from the VEX library and used different tools to design the 90 degree standoff. I used the free rotate and free move tool to position the standoffs, with the 90 degree constraint to keep it at exactly 90 degrees. In order to combine the two, I used a joint to make it one structure. This project gave me my first real experience with 3D designing. Using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019 gave me a holistic education regarding 3D design. I was able to use a variety of tools to explore my inquiries and potentially better my team’s scope in the future. I saw how in 3D design, the possibilities are limitless. In the future, if I have access to a 3D printer, I can actually use the parts I design. For now, I can continue experimenting with various tools and applications Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019 has to offer. Furthermore, as I continue to seek a career path in engineering or robotics, 3D modeling will prove to be an imperative skill to possess on my journey to innovate and improve the world’s living standard. This experience working with Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019 has allowed me to embark on this journey.
